After decades of judging singers, Simon Cowell has heard almost every kind of audition imaginable.
Powerful singers.
Terrible singers.
Impersonators.
Comedians.
Magicians.
But during America’s Got Talent Season 17, Simon experienced something completely different.
He watched himself perform.
Well… almost.
When artificial-intelligence company Metaphysic walked onto the AGT stage, the judges knew they were about to see some kind of technology demonstration.
What they didn’t know was that Simon himself was about to become the star of the act.
And once the giant screen switched on, even Simon didn’t seem prepared for what appeared in front of him.
The Act Started With Two AI Creators
Metaphysic co-founders Tom Graham and Chris Ume introduced themselves and explained that their company used artificial intelligence to create highly realistic synthetic media.
That explanation alone didn’t reveal much about what they planned to do.
Then they invited another familiar face onto the stage.
Daniel Emmet.
AGT fans may remember Daniel as the singer who reached the finals during Season 13.
This time, however, Daniel wasn’t simply returning to perform another normal song.
He was about to provide the voice and physical performance for something much stranger.
Daniel Started Singing — But That Wasn’t His Face
Daniel began performing Chicago’s classic “You’re the Inspiration.”
At first, the audience could see Daniel standing behind the microphone.
Then the giant screen revealed what Metaphysic had created.
Daniel’s movements were being used to animate a synthetic version of Simon Cowell.
Suddenly, it looked like Simon himself was singing the song.
The resemblance was close enough that the judges immediately reacted.
Sofia Vergara looked back and forth between the real Simon sitting beside her and the digital version singing on the screen.
The audience erupted.
And Simon appeared both amused and slightly uncomfortable watching an artificial version of himself suddenly become a singer.
No, Simon Wasn’t Actually Singing
The illusion was extremely convincing, but Simon’s real voice wasn’t being used.
Daniel Emmet was doing the singing.
Metaphysic’s technology transformed the visual performance so that Daniel appeared on-screen with Simon’s face.
The result was a form of AI-generated synthetic media often described as a deepfake.
Metaphysic later confirmed that Daniel provided the singing voice for their synthetic Simon throughout the company’s AGT appearances.
That distinction is important.
The performance wasn’t secretly revealing that Simon could suddenly sing like a professional vocalist.
Instead, the talent was the combination of Daniel’s real singing performance with Metaphysic’s artificial-intelligence visuals.
And that combination created one of the strangest auditions of the season.
Simon Found the “Perfect Contestant”
Once the performance ended, the judges were laughing and applauding.
Simon jokingly suggested that after years of searching for the perfect contestant, they had finally found one — essentially, an AI version of himself.
Heidi Klum was impressed by the technology.
Howie Mandel admitted afterward that the realistic Simon deepfake was both impressive and slightly frightening.
And Sofia had perhaps the strangest perspective of everyone: she could watch synthetic Simon singing while the real Simon sat right beside her.
Then came the vote.
Simon — yes.
Sofia — yes.
Heidi — yes.
Howie — yes.
Metaphysic was moving forward with four yes votes.
This Was Only the Beginning
The Simon performance was just the introduction to what Metaphysic would eventually do on AGT.
Later in the season, the team returned with even more ambitious synthetic performances.
During the semifinals, they created AI versions of Simon, Howie Mandel and host Terry Crews appearing to perform opera together.
And in the finals, Metaphysic brought a digital version of Elvis Presley onto the AGT stage while also transforming performers into versions of Simon, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara.
The act eventually finished fourth in Season 17, becoming one of the competition’s most successful technology-based acts.
When Technology Becomes the Talent
Most AGT contestants show what they can do with their own voice, body or traditional performance skill.
Metaphysic presented a completely different question:
What happens when technology itself becomes part of the performance?
Daniel Emmet was really singing.
But the Simon viewers saw performing on the screen wasn’t real.
The illusion existed because AI could map another performer’s movements onto a synthetic version of Simon’s face.
In 2022, that was still surprising enough to make an entire AGT theater erupt.
And perhaps the funniest part was watching the real Simon Cowell sit just a few feet away from a digital version of himself apparently becoming the singer he normally judges.
